Basic Function
The underwriter gathers, reviews, evaluates and underwrites new and existing business applications, policies and endorsements within established guidelines to develop a growing and profitable book of business. Makes underwriting decisions which are consistent with growth, retention and expense management goals.  Ensures that prompt and courteous service is always provided to our customers.  Provides assistance to others as necessary to ensure that department goals are met.

Essential Functions   

  1. Underwriting/Risk Evaluation
    Uses good judgement to evaluate new applications and renewals in a timely manner for profit potential and compatibility with underwriting guidelines and procedures.  Underwriter reviews various underwriting reports such as loss history, financial and underwriting inspection reports to verify accuracy of information and eligibility.   Underwriter approves, modifies or rejects these applications according to established guidelines and provides the necessary documentation for others to follow the underwriting decision.   Meets with appropriate internal/external contacts to establish support needs for new and renewal policies, inspections and reports.
  2. Customer Service
    Maintains superior levels of customer service by responding to inquiries and questions from agents, vendors, customers and internal departments regarding rating, coverage(s), underwriting guidelines and procedures. Researches problems and assists with solutions.  Obtains additional underwriting information as needed to foster a cooperative agency/insurer relationship.
  3. Training
    Participates in company in-house training sessions as well as external insurance courses or self study courses. Fulfills continuing education requirements to maintain licensing, when applicable.  Encouraged to pursue insurance designations independently.
  4. Additional Responsibilities
    Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Strong computer skills to include Microsoft Office Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, SharePoint and Access. 

Education, Work Experience, Training and Certifications

  • Bachelor degree in a relevant field preferred or a combination of education and insurance experience.
  • Insurance industry courses a plus.
  • Producer license a plus.
